Antioxidants Supplement to Sunscreen

The studies revealed that skin cream rich in vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid covers a protective coat against sun damage and ultimately decreases the chances of cancer. It works effectively in reducing possibilities of cancer formation that is associated with mutation in skin cells.

The harmful ray of ultraviolet radiation disrupts the skin cells by causing oxidative stress. It has already studied that vitamin E and vitamin C acts effective antioxidant boosters. These work best when worked combined. The ferulic acid is an antioxidant plant that stimulates antioxidant effects of vitamins.

A research performed to study how effective topical applications are in neutralizing such damage caused by sun rays. The American researchers tested and studied the effect of a cream that contains vitamin C (15%), vitamin E (1%), and ferulic acid (0.5%). They experimented on 9 adults and then exposed them to simulated sun irradiation.

The result after this experiment concluded that as compared to those creams that lack active ingredients the cream containing ferulic acid lowers the redness on the skin after exposure to sun. It also lessens the sunburn effects on skin cells. It has learnt that the active cream builds a blockage in the production of thymine dimmers that is a type of UV-related genetic damage. It also blocks induction of tumor suppressor gene p53. The unprotected skin produces cytokines when it is exposed to UV radiations. It provokes inflammation and suppresses the functioning of immune system. On the other hand protected skin did not show any such effects.

However, it confirms that creams rich in antioxidants can be used as supplement to sunscreen that provides abundant photoprotection to the skin.
