If you want to know how to deal with dandruff, it is very important to understand first what dandruff is all about, along with its main causes. First of all, dandruff, also known as “Pityriasis simplex capillitii” or scurf is a condition that affects the scalp. It causes white flakes of skin to appear near the roots of the hair due to the fast skin renewal process of the scalp. Skin cells on the scalp renew even for normal people but affected people have a very faster renewal process so there is more dead skin and it is more noticeable.

Causes of Dandruff

The actual cause of dandruff is still unknown but some conditions are known to be closely connected to dandruff. Dry skin is one of the most common conditions that are connected to dandruff. The itching and scratching causes flakes of old skin to show up on the hair near the roots. Seborrheic dermatitis is another common cause of dandruff. This type of dandruff is characterized by greasy reddish skin which is covered with flaky yellow or white scales. Psoriasis is another condition that causes dandruff. This is characterized by thick silvery and scaly skin that accumulates on the scalp, neck, forehead, knees, arms, elbows or trunk. Contact dermatitis or sensitivity to certain hair products can also cause experiencing the itchy condition.

How to Deal with Dandruff

The most important step in how to deal with dandruff is to determine the possible cause of the condition. In some cases, the condition is only caused by poor hygiene or sensitivity to hair products. In most cases, washing the hair with a good anti-dandruff shampoo will get rid of the embarrassing condition. Be careful when it comes to choosing an anti-dandruff shampoo, watch out for irritation because it might make the problem worse.

Massaging the scalp with warm coconut oil mixed with a teaspoon of boric powder is one of the best natural remedies for dandruff. Remember to let the solution sit for around 2 hours before washing off with an anti-dandruff shampoo. Another tip on how to deal with dandruff is to improve blood circulation by brushing the hair two to three times a day. A healthy diet and drinking eight to ten glasses of water daily can also help by improving the health of your hair.
