MAC Volcanic Overview

MAC Volcanic Ash Scrub is by far one of the most interesting facial scrubs on the market. The product is formulated from live volcanic ash from the islands of Vanuatu, and sugar crystals. The products color and consistency are quite contradictory to the products fragrance. While reading product reviews from consumers the most common complaint was MAC’s failure to keep the product in stock year round. MAC’s Volcanic Ash Scrub is designed for all skin types; oily, dry, normal and combination skin. The MAC cosmetic line contains both makeup and skin care products.

The MAC website was easy to navigate however the lack of information was unfortunate. Especially with a product as unique as Volcanic Ash Scrub. In fact much of what I learned about the product came from third party sources.

MAC Volcanic Ash Scrub consist of two key elements, volcanic ash and sugar crystals. The volcanic ash is derived from live volcanoes from the island of Vanuatu. The scrub is considered to be an eco friendly product.

The product consistency is almost like tar. The color of the product is black this combination of strange consistency and color leave the consumer surprised when it comes to fragrance. The most common theme in all the reviews was the surpisingly pleasant scent.

The sugar crystals in the product work as an abrasive. The dead skin that accumulates on the outer layer of the skin is shed when the sugar granules are introduced. Rubbing in a circular motion excess debris is removed, allowing new skin to be exposed to the surface. With the dead skin removed, the new skin is able to absorb the volcanic ash. Volcanic ash contains properties that enhance the complexion. Some examples of these are trace elements and minerals. When using a product like MAC Volcanic Ash Scrub, special precautions should be taken. The new skin is exposed to the sun making it vulnerable to burning and sun damage.

MAC Volcanic - The Bottomline

There is no argument that the product does scrub face and remove debris. However I am skeptical about how well the product performs compared to it’s competitors. There are two things that make this product appealing, the fact that it is made by MAC and it contains the ash of live volcanoes from the Vanuatu Islands. While the product is interesting, this may not be enough to justify purchasing it

In conclusion, MAC Volcanic Ash Scrub is more of a novelty than a powerful skincare scrub. The product’s performance compared to cost is disproportionate, while it is not extremely over priced there are similar products that are substantially less in cost.
