On Sleep Problems related to Menopause

First of all, let us define menopause and sleep problems. Menopause is a normal part of a woman’s life where she stops having her monthly menstrual period. It symbolizes the end of a woman’s reproductive years. On the other hand, sleep problems basically refer to any ailment that interferes with a person’s normal sleep pattern. Menopause and sleep problems are closely related. In fact, almost all women going through menopause experience sleep problems. About 56% of menopausal women suffer from a particular sleep problem called insomnia.

Causes of Sleep Problems during Menopause

Sleep problems during menopause include common symptoms such as waking up often, restlessness and the general inability to fall asleep. Hot flashes and night sweats are two of the most common symptoms of menopause that are related to sleep problems. However, sometimes the problem is only psychological. Too much stress, overexertion and other psychological conditions can cause sleep problems whether a person is experiencing menopause or not.

On the other hand, the cause can also be physical. The hormone levels of women undergoing menopause become abnormal. In particular, the estrogen level of menopausal women decline significantly which also results to a decrease in serotonin levels. Serotonin is necessary for the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. This is the reason why menopause and sleep problems go hand in hand most of the time.
