Skin Lightening – Knowing the Right Ingredients Makes a Difference in Skin Lightening

By: Melissa Snyte

Skin lightening is a natural byproduct of the focus on youth in the modern world. Young is always better perceptually. Younger looking skin is part of that obsession. That is why many men and women look for skin lightening products to enhance their appearance. On the quest for skin lightening products, you need to use caution. Some products contain ingredients that may cause irritation or damage to the skin. Getting to know what these ingredients are will allow you to find skin-lightening products that will protect your skin while also making it brighter.

In North America and Europe, mercury is no longer an acceptable skin-lightening ingredient. Many other countries also have this ban in place. If you decide to purchase a skin-lightening product from a developing nation, use caution that, you do not get a product containing mercury. This toxic substance can accumulate on the skin over time. Some of it may absorb into the skin and become absorbed into the tissues. With time, mercury can become a poison. Make sure your skin lightening products come from reputable sources. It is better to pay a bit more for skin lightening products than taking a health risk. Avoid products from third world countries whenever possible.

Hydroquinone is another controversial ingredient in some skin lightening products. This is a proven skin-lightening ingredient. However, there are concerns with long-term use. Some countries, like France, have banned it as an ingredient in skin lightening products due to a fear of increased cancer risk. Most testing shows that it does its job best in products that are clear of contamination. In products containing other skin lightening ingredients, the hydroquinone can cause major irritation to the skin. Many experts recommend looking for products that do not contain hydroquinone or contain a formula of less than 2%. Concentrations over 4% will cause irritation in most people.

There is natural skin lightening alternatives. One of them is Arbutin which derives from some berries like cranberries, mulberries, and blueberries. Studies show that it works to inhibit melanin like hydroquinone, without the associated irritation. Other common natural skin lightening ingredients include licorice extract, vitamin C, pomegranate extract, and ellagic acid. When looking at skin lightening products, make sure you find a product that contains as many natural ingredients as possible. This will give you assurance that you are not exposing your skin to things that may cause damage. Skin lightening is a good thing if done properly.
