Jolie’s aunt Debbie Martin expired recently after losing her battle with breast cancer. The news of sad demise came just two weeks after Angelina Jolie revealed, she had undergone preventative double mastectomy. This treatment was done to lower her risk of breast cancer.

Debbie Martin, 61 was younger sister of Marcheline Bertrand, Jolie’s late mother who died in 2007. Debbie was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004.

Angelina, 37 mother of six learnt having defective BRCA1 gene decided to undergo preventive double mastectomy this Feb. She had reconstruction surgery in April; and decided to remove her ovaries to minimize her risk of cancer.

Unfortunately, Debbie was not aware of the presence of this gene until diagnosed with cancer. Ron Martin, uncle of Jolie said that if they had known this earlier; they would have done exactly what Jolie did. He is extremely proud of Jolie’s decision to be proactive and undergo preventive double mastectomy.

Angelina Jolie’s Heroic Decision:

Earlier, Jolie explained how her mother’s death informed her decision to have this surgery. The actor said she can now reassure her children not to worry and mommy is just the same except for some visible scars.

She had undergone certain medical procedures for three months. Initially, she had nipple delay to capitalize saving nipples; followed by breast tissue removal and reconstruction. Brad Pitt was by her side during this brave journey.

She decided to go public with her decision to create awareness among other women. According to founder of The UK’s National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline this revelation would benefit women having family history of cancer. They will be conscious to undergo monthly screenings to remain proactive.

Angelina said that her decision was a common sense but it took certain amount of courage to face this medical journey.
