Anti-aging Properties of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is popularly known as an immune system booster. It prevents and fights several diseases such as the common cold. However, experts have discovered that vitamin C also plays an important role in fighting skin aging and bringing out beautiful skin. The anti-aging properties of Vitamin C have made it a popular ingredient among anti-aging products.

What Vitamin C Does?

The following are said to be the anti-aging properties of Vitamin C.

  • Prevents wrinkles by stimulating collagen production.
  • Protects the skin from photo-aging.
  • Improves skin healing.
The Anti-aging Properties of Vitamin C

Collagen is a known substance that helps delay signs of skin aging. According to studies, Vitamin C shows an ability to stimulate collagen production that helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles. A 2007 study shows that people who include ample amounts of Vitamin C in their diet developed fewer wrinkles than those who do not use Vitamin C. Vitamin C works as a cofactor for collagen-producing enzyme. In a separate clinical test, application of Vitamin C-rich lotion among postmenopausal women showed great skin improvement for these women.

Another benefit Vitamin C gives to the skin is its protection from photo-aging. Photo-aging occurs when the skin appears older due to excessive sunlight exposure. In photo-aging, the skin becomes dull, dry and wrinkled. In a specific study, Vitamin C-rich lotion and cream were applied to 20 women who have photo-aged skin. The results show significant improvement in skin health including the reduction of fine lines and furrows and improvement in firmness and suppleness.

A recent study also shows that Vitamin C helps in faster healing of wounds. According to Dr. Tiago Duarte, Vitamin C protects the skin from free radical damage and continued supplementation of this Vitamin will lead to a more youthful skin.

Where to Get Vitamin C

It is said that even the ancient people used Vitamin C in their beauty regimens. Ancient Tibetan women are said to apply sea Buckhorn, a plant rich in Vitamin C on the back of their hands and face to delay the signs of premature aging.

Native North Americans are also said to make their skin ointment to heal wounds from rose petals which contain high doses of Vitamin C.

Nowadays, Vitamin C can be found in the food we eat. Some of them include oranges, guavas, red and green sweet pepper, kiwi, grapefruit juice, tomatoes, strawberries, Brussel sprouts and cantaloupes.

A number of skin care products also now contain Vitamin C because of its proven anti-aging properties.

Conclusion

The anti-aging properties of Vitamin C have proven this substance as an important ingredient among beauty products. Its ability to stimulate production of collagen, protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, and heal wounds faster all help to make the skin look younger, firmer and healthier. Women are advised to check the product’s label before purchasing and look for Vitamin C among the ingredients.
