Avon Products Receives Warning from FDA
When it comes to anti-aging skin products, you might think that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is out of the picture already. You have thought wrong. Just recently, the FDA issued a warning to Avon regarding its claims on its products. It seems like the FDA wants Avon to re-evaluate their claims on products as these products may actually be considered as drugs already.
The FDA and Avon
The FDA is an agency under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is an agency assigned to protect and promote public health through regulating and supervising tobacco products, prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements, food safety, medical devices and many more. Products with FDA approval mean that the product has passed the rigorous standards of the agency.
Avon is a global beauty company with over $11 billion in yearly revenue. Avon sells to women in more than 100 countries through direct selling. There are about 6.4 million Avon sales representatives all around the world. Avon products include intimate wear, cosmetics and skin care products.
The FDA listed down the products that are put in question. These are Anew Reversalist Renewal Serum, Anew Clinical Advanced Wrinkle Corrector, Anew Reversalist Night Renewal Cream, Anew Clinical Thermafirm Face Lifting Cream and the Solutions Liquid Bra Toning Gel. The warning was about Avon’s questionable claims on the real intention of these products. Avon’s website shows that these products affect the structure and function of the body. If this is the case, these products are already considered as drugs under the FDA Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
Avon’s questionable claims raised the FDA eyebrows when its claims have gone beyond saying that it can reduce wrinkle visibility or can make the skin smoother. The FDA highlighted some of the claims made. For example, the Anew Wrinkle Corrector claimed to rebuilt collagen, regenerate hydroproteins and stimulate elastin. The Liquid Bra Toning Gel claims to boost production of elastin and collagen. Because of these claims, FDA is asking Avon to get their claims right.
According to the FDA, Avon is not a qualified expert in the field of drugs and medicines. With Avon’s questionable claims, FDA will have to subject these products to the drug approval process. Thus, Avon has to start taking action on correcting their false claims and labeling. Not only that, this is also false advertising to consumers.
Avon has not failed themselves when it comes to the quality of their products. It pays to keep in mind that the FDA is not questioning their products but their claims. This may be a case of making too promising claims that has gone overboard. Fortunately, these questionable claims can now be made right.
