Taylor Swift To Receive an Award In Her Name – BMI
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), an organization that sees through the welfare of and royalties due to music performers and songwriters, announced it will bestow a special award to Taylor Swift during the 64th Annual BMI Pop Awards to happen on May 10.
Fresh from a sweet, solid win from the 2016 iHeartRadio Awards, having received awards for ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Female Artist of the Year’, ‘Best Tour’, ‘Most Meme-able Moment’, and ‘Most Thumbed-Up Artist of the Year’, Taylor Swift is set to receive the BMI Taylor Swift Award. Yes, it’s in the pop / country singer’s name.
In an announcement posted by BMI on its website, it said that the award will be presented to Taylor “in recognition of her incomparable creative and artistic talent and influence on music lovers throughout the world”.
BMI Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations Barbara Cane, who will co-host the award’s night with BMI President and CEO Mike O’Neill, further says, “Taylor Swift has transformed pop culture through her songs, artistry and indomitable spirit…She has had a profound impact, not only musically, but also through her personal conviction and commitment to create a standard that values and respects music for everyone. We felt it appropriate to award Taylor with an honor that is as unique and special as she is.”
Taylor will be only the second recipient of such a prestigious and novel recognition from the 76-year-old BMI. By far, only Michael Jackson was elevated to the same pedestal back in 1990.
This Is How Taylor’s Success Sounds Like
Born in the quiet town of Wyomissing in Pennsylvania, Taylor Swift knew in her heart at a very young age that she was made for grander things. She started singing and writing songs, and by the age of 14, she had moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue her dreams of becoming a well-loved country music singer.
The irresistibly hummable and effortless recall of “Our Song” undoubtedly launched Taylor Swift’s journey to super stardom. “Our Song” also happened to make her the youngest person to ever perform and write a top hit song that made it to the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart. “Teardrops On My Guitar” secured her a spot on the hearts of her growing following. She was only 17.
Two years later, in 2008, Taylor came out with her second album, “Fearless” which brought fans, “Love Story”, and “White Horse”, allowing Taylor to bridge country music and pop music. “Speak Now”, released in 2010, served as the breaking out album of Taylor. The album featured extremely popular and controversial songs. One was “Back to December” which was rumored to be Taylor Swift’s apology song to then-ex-boyfriend, Taylor Lautner. Another was “Dear John” which was believed to be addressed to another ex-boyfriend, John Mayer. The album’s tenth track, “Better than Revenge,” was allegedly addressed to actress, Camilla Belle whom Taylor’s yet another beau, Joe Jonas, pursued after a brief relationship with the singer-songwriter.
In 2012, Taylor once again ruled the charts with the hit singles, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “I Knew You Were Trouble”, to name just two. Her most recent album release, “1989” has been highly acclaimed for its pop and yet still original, novel and characteristically classic Taylor Swift quality. The album, released in 2014, includes hit singles “Shake It Off”, “Blank Space”, “Style”, and “Wildest Dreams”.
Young and Multi-Awarded
Two-time Grammy Winner for Album of the Year, and with a grand total of 10 Grammy Awards in the bag, Taylor Swift certainly has what it takes to become this generation’s biggest music artist. She definitely possesses the power and rare talent to stay on top. Her last three albums, “1989”, “Red” and “Speak Now” sold more than one million copies on their first week of release.
Nope, Taylor is not about to hit the brakes anytime soon. Coming out fresh from a seven-month world tour for “1989”, Taylor Swift is eyed left, right and center in all things music and entertainment – not to mention, winning every award she has been nominated into.
Beyond superstardom, Taylor Swift has also been vocal about how new media has been changing music and how it is being consumed. The artist is known for pulling the plug off against Spotify over its failure to properly compensate artists for their music. Since then, other artists have followed suit, including the also famous, Adele.
“I want to make the most of this cultural relevance or success or whatever you want to call it, because it’s not going to last,” Taylor Swift is quoted to have said. With a massive contribution to the music industry, and the courage to protect the guild, Taylor Swift deserves to be acknowledged with a BMI award named after her.
