CFDA Fashion Awards 2016 – The Winners Revealed!
Having a CFDA Fashion Award means you have really hit the big time in the fashion industry. For designers from all over the world, this is the only award that really matters. In fact, it is considered the biggest night in fashion. The recently concluded event in the Hammerstein Ballroom was a very memorable night. Find out the significant parts of the CFDA this year and discover what you missed.
The ceremony was hosted by comedian Joel McHale. It was an interesting choice and many were surprised that McHale was chosen. He is not known to be a big fashion fan but the CFDA’s chief executive, Steven Kolb, said the night would be more lively and interesting if someone outside of the fashion industry hosted.
Tributes and Trophies
The late David Bowie was honoured with a posthumous Board of Directors’ Tribute. It was one of the most significant moments of the night, honouring the recently passed rock and fashion icon. The International Award was given to Alessandro Michele of Gucci while Donna Karan received the Founder’s Award in honor of Eleanor Lambert. On the other hand, the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Norma Kamali.
Queen Bey Stole the Show
The Fashion Icon Award was given to Beyoncé which was one of the biggest moments of the night. The appearance of Queen Bey was unexpected; she had to sneak in to the 2016 CFDA Awards with husband Jay Z. The two were accompanied byBeyoncé’s mother and the couple’s daughter, Blue Ivy. She didn’t even walk the red carpet but she still managed to get a lot of attention in her stunning gold and black Givenchy tux while sporting an over-the-top, wide-brimmed black hat.
Queen Bey took the stage and gave a touching, anecdotal speech after she was presented with the Fashion Icon Award by CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg. She talked about how she feels so much love and how proud she is. She also mentioned how fashion has been a big part of her life, starting even before she was born (her grandmother was a seamstress). The speech mentioned how her grandparents didn’t have enough money so her grandmother sewed clothes for the nuns and priests while also making uniforms for students in exchange for education in a Catholic school.

The talent and love for sewing was then passed to Beyoncé’s mother who used it to design and sew the first costumes of Destiny’s Child. High-end labels didn’t want to dress the girl group when they were starting out. She then thanked her mother and the rest of her family who helped make all her dreams come true. She also thanked other designers and then ended her speech saying “Thank you so much for this incredible award. I’ll never forget this night. God bless y’all. Thank you.”
