What is Hyperpigmentation?

What causes hyperpigmentation?

When the skin is exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays, most especially when chronic, the otherwise healthy melanocytes are damaged and start to act abnormally. The damaged cells, in turn, cause an overproduction of melanin that end up on skin as sun spots, liver spots, and freckles.

Hyperpigmentation may also signal hormonal imbalance, nutrient deficiency, and the appearance or existence of more serious diseases that includes, but is not limited to, Addison’s Disease, Cushing’s Syndrome, Nelson’s Syndrome, and hypothyroidism. Heredity is another major factor in developing hyperpigmentation. Among the causes of hyperpigmentation where genes are the culprit includes Vitiligo (characterized by the appearance of white patches on skin), and Albinism (the general lack of melanin on skin).

Pregnancy can cause both temporary and permanent hyperpigmentation. Melasma, or Chloasma, is common among pregnant women. It often causes darkening in certain parts of the body during pregnancy, such as in the face, underarms, neck, and back of the knees.

Lifestyle factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, stress, and lack of exercise as well as certain medications, and poor choice or excessive use of cosmetics and other skin products can all lead to hyperpigmentation.

What you can do to prevent or reverse hyperpigmentation?

In general, hyperpigmentation caused by external factors like sun exposure can be managed or treated with topical applications and skin treatments. While improvements may be achieved for genetically-caused hyperpigmentation, it may not be completely eliminated.

Below are some tips you may want to try to prevent and reverse hyperpigmentation:

  • Always wear sunscreen. Never brave the sun without sunscreen. Don’t just settle for a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) as these only protect you from UVB rays.   • Obtain dermatological recommendation for prescription level doses of skin whitening ingredients. That includes hydroquinone, kojic acid, azelaic acid, and mandelic acid.

      However, safety issues on the use of hydroquinone for skin care have been raised. Findings suggest that hydroquinone is associated with DNA damage and therefore qualifies as a carcinogenic. Other side effects observed include development of cataract, and pigmentation in the white area of the eyeball (sclera). Still, side effects have yet to be established.     • Kojic acid. Kojic acid works by inhibiting the release of tyrosinase, a bodily enzyme responsible for producing more melanin from the oxidation of an amino acid known as tyrosine. As a result, it prevents overproduction of melanin, and the unnecessary effect of darkening your skin. Other tyrosinase inhibits include licorice extract and mulberry extract.
    • Azelaic acid. If acne and other skin inflammations like rosacea are causing your dark spots, azelaic acid may be the better option over hydroquinone. Other than possessing skin lightening properties, azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that may also help treat these skin conditions.
    • Mandelic acid. For hypersensitive skin types, topical treatments formulated with mandelic acid may be the best option. Unlike the other active ingredients mentioned above, mandelic acid. It is specially potent for treating melasma, and does so without irritating skin. Skin irritations may worsen hyperpigmentation.
  • Consider undergoing clinically administered treatments. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists the following skincare treatments to potentially improve the appearance of, and possibly even eliminate, dark spots:
    • Chemical peel. In this treatment, a chemical solution is used to deliberately burn skin so that the tougher outer layer of the skin is sloughed off, so that younger skin can surface in its place.
    • Microdermabrasion. A procedure that involves deliberately wounding the patient’s skin to rid skin of old, dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production for new skin to surface.
    • Laser and light treatments. This combination treatment often involves a chemical solution and laser, and are perfect for hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage and aging.
    • Laser and fractional resurfacing. This treatment uses a combination of mechanical skin exfoliation and laser, and are great for improving the appearance of dark spots caused by acne scars, burns, and wounds.
    • Cryotherapy. Involves freezing age spots using liquid nitrogen. This results to age spots being lifted up and eliminated from the skin.
  • Try homemade remedies to treat hyperpigmentation. If you’re looking for a more natural solution to treat hyperpigmentation or improve the appearance of a few dark spots, home remedies may work for you.

Prepare a mixture of juice of one fresh lemon, and mashed papaya or red currants. Mix ingredients thoroughly and apply on skin. This mixture is infused with natural ingredients that help rejuvenate skin. Lemon juice also has natural astringent properties that help lighten dark skin. Other options include buttermilk (which contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxyl acid) and natural kojic acid (which is derived from rice wine).
