Hormonal Imbalance in Women: Causes and Symptoms

Hormonal imbalance is defined as having too much or too little amount of a particular hormone in a person’s body. Both hormonal imbalance in women and men are caused by the irregularity in the number of one or all of the body’s three primary hormones of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone produced in the ovaries for women and testes in men.

Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers that affect many things in our system such as growth, development, mood changes, etc. They are also responsible for some of the body’s processes. They are produced in the endocrine glands located on the different parts of the body such as the pituitary gland, thymus, thyroid, adrenal gland and pancreas. An imbalance on the different hormones may result in serious medical conditions such as diabetes and dwarfism among others.

The basic reason for hormonal balance in women is the incorrect balance between her progesterone and estrogen levels. One of the common reasons is the stoppage of ovulation which prevents the production of progesterone in the ovaries, decreasing its levels. This in turn results to the increase of estrogen level. Any irregularity in the perfect balance of these two hormones leads to dramatic effects on the health of women such as several disorders and sickness.

Many cases of hormonal imbalance in women and men are associated with the genetic makeup of one’s body. But, there are other causes of hormonal imbalance that are not associated in the natural physical build of a woman. Below are just a few of them.

Contraceptive Pills

These pills are made of synthetic estrogen and are primarily used to increase the estrogen level in the body. It should never be taken regularly by women who already have a normal estrogen level.

Stress

Recent studies confirm that stress causes a distraction on the amount of hormones our bodies produce when under it.

Pollution

Our environment also contributes to hormonal imbalance especially because of the chemicals and poisons in the air. Another reason is smoking.

Non-organic products and meat

These products when consumed on an above average amounts can cause an increase in the amount of estrogen.

The following are few of the symptoms that are relevant on the hormonal imbalance in women:

  2. Weariness and extreme fatigue
  3. Pre- Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) symptoms
  4. Facial growth

  6. Hair Loss
  7. Osteoporosis
  8. Menstrual irregularities
  9. Mood swings
  10. Loss of sex drive
  11. Tender breasts
  12. Foggy thinking and loss of concentration
  13. Sleep problems
  14. Fibroid tumors
  15. Depression
  16. Menstrual irregularities
  17. Weight gain
  18. Hot flashes

Having more of the said symptoms increases the likelihood that there is a hormonal imbalance in women who experience them. They are caused by the elevated level of estrogen in the body. Few of the reasons for these symptoms are the food we intake and the different chemicals we use in daily basis. However, there are also cases that excessive level of estrogen is already in the genes and physical make up of an individual that this hormonal imbalance occurs.
These changes can take a toll on the lifestyle and quality of life of the sufferer. They could also impact on performance of different activities and relationships to friends, families and associates.
