Lupita Nyong’o’s $150,000 Oscar Dress Found

Two days after it was stolen from Lupita Nyong’o’s hotel room in West Hollywood, the $150,000 Pearl Oscars Dress has been found in a bathroom. The Calvin Klein dress was adorned with 6,000 pearls.

A media source received an anonymous call that the dress was in a restroom in the second floor of the London Hotel where Lupita was staying, and they informed the West Hollywood Sherriff’s Department. The hotel staff searched and found the dress in a bag hidden behind a counter in the bathroom.

The officials believe the thief might have returned the dress after realizing the pearls on it were fake. The dress was stolen from Nyong’o’s hotel room on Wednesday after she left the door open.

Lupita had worn the dress while she was attending Sunday’s Academy Awards in one of the most stunning looks of the night.

Lieutenant Michael White of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told reporters at a news conference on Friday that they received a call around 3 p.m. local time from a media outlet who reported hearing from an anonymous caller that informed them that the dress had been returned to the London Hotel.

According Lieutenant Michael White, the source said two pearls were removed from the dress by the thief who took them to the Garment District in downtown Los Angeles where the thief was told they were not real.

The thief then decided to take the dress back to the London West Hollywood hotel and called the media house to inform them where the dress was hidden.

A spokeswoman with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Nicole Nishida, later confirmed that the media source was TMZ.

After receiving the call, TMZ tipped off the police in West Hollywood, which was carrying out the investigation.

Lieutenant Michael said the investigation into the theft would continue whether the jewels were authentic or not.

He said that even if they found out that the pearls were not real, they still have a burglary case meaning they still have a grand theft. A hotel representative said the theft was a terribly unfortunate situation, adding that they are working with law enforcement on their investigation.

Lupita, 31, won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2014 and presented at this year’s awards, wearing the custom dress that was designed for her by Francisco Costa.
