New Spiderman Film Gets Official Title
British actor Tom Holland will star in the 2017 Spider-Man reboot.
The title of the film is Spider-Man: Homecomingwhich was only confirmed very recently. Holland himself announced the title of the film at CinemaCon which he was held in Las Vegas. He and the chairman of Sony Picture Entertainment’s Motion Pictures Group (Tom Rothman) gave a presentation which was highly anticipated by fans of the web-slinging superhero.
Although the film will open in cinemas sometime in the second half of 2017, fans are excited about the appearance of Spider-Man in the upcoming movie fondly called Avengers 3 by fans (officially, the title is Captain America: Civil War). The excitement started with the leaked picture of Spidey at the set of Civil Warwhich spread online like wildfire in January. However, the picture turned out to be a fake, to the dismay of fans all over the world.
According to Rothman, the title has a double meaning. First of all, “homecoming” is an obvious high school reference. It shows the struggles and conflicts of young Peter Parker, juggling school with his extra-curricular superhero activities. Secondly, the film is some sort of a homecoming to the Marvel Cinematic universe. It is something that everyone is excited about.
Everyone remembers the approval of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn on Tom Holland’s take on the web-slinging superhero. He even hailed the actor as “the best Spider-Man ever,” comparing his interpretation of Spider-Man to the Oscar-winning portrayal of Heath Ledger as super-villain The Joker in The Dark Night.
Interestingly, the recent Sony presentation was closed with a clip that features a conversation between Iron Man and Spider-Man from Captain America: Civil War. The video will surely spread online once it is released officially by Sony.
In the said video clip, Peter Parker comes home from school to discover that his beloved Aunt May is waiting on the couch with Tony Stark (who has a black eye for unknown reasons). Then, Iron Man’s alter ego gives a job offer to Peter. There is an establishing shot of a big metropolitan residential building where the Parkers live then “Queens” flashes on the screen in a striking font.
The failure of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise is still fresh in mind but most people are unaware that it almost never happened. Sony wanted to continue the original Spider-Man movie series, spending years developing Spider-Man 4 even before the release of Spider-Man 3. Various writers were contacted by Sony including James Vanderbilt who even sketched out plans for Spider-Man 5 and 6 which was supposed to be a two-part story. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst were ready to return filming withSpidey fighting Vulture and Black Cat. The beginning of the end started when the director walked away from the project then everything just fell apart.
With the look of things, the upcoming Spider-Man film will be the beginning of a new era.
