8 Sunscreen Mistakes You Should Avoid This Summer

You should already be aware of the importance of using sunscreen daily. First of all, it can help reduce risk of skin cancer. Secondly, it is one of the most effective tools against premature skin aging. Adding it to your skincare routine can considerably delay the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other aging signs on your skin. The main problem is that some people make common mistakes that can affect how sunscreen works. Here are the most common mistakes that you should avoid.

1. Using an Old Bottle of Sunscreen

This is one of the biggest mistakes that most people make. They think the old bottle of sunscreen they found from years ago is still as effective. However, the active ingredients in sunscreen tend to deteriorate over time. Thus, its effectiveness may be reduced especially if the storage conditions are not followed.

Ideally, the amount of sunscreen to be applied on the whole body should be approximately 1 ounce or the amount to fill one shot glass. Of course, you need to re-apply after sweating a lot or swimming in order to ensure maximum sun protection.

3. Not Giving It Enough Time to Be Absorbed

Another common mistake people make is applying sunscreen then heading outdoors or swimming immediately afterwards. This is a big mistake; you should give the skin enough time to absorb the active ingredients of the sunscreen to ensure optimum effectiveness. Generally, you should apply sunscreen about 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure.

You also need to protect your lips from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Purchase a lip balm that offers SPF protection. If you will be participating in water activities, you should invest in a water-resistant lip balm that has at least SPF 15.

5. Missing Important Areas

Even though you think you have covered every part of your body, you may have missed one or two. The most commonly ignored areas are the ears, toes, collarbone and neckline. This will result to sunburn and can increase risk of skin cancer so you should be more careful when applying sunscreen.

6. Not Utilizing SPF in Skincare Products

There are skincare products and makeup that also offer SPF protection. These, together with your regular sunscreen will ensure optimal sun protection. Check if your favorite moisturizer has a version that also offers around SPF 30 protection.

Most people think there is no need to rub the surface and spread sunscreen spray. However, this is important if you want to have an even coverage. Otherwise, there are some areas that may not have enough coverage.

8. Not Using Sunscreen during Cloudy Days

Even when it is cloudy, the sun’s UV rays can still reach you and cause damage. This is why you still need to apply sunscreen even when the sun is covered by clouds. On a relative note, you should also apply sunscreen on areas that are covered by clothes especially if you will be spending a lot of time under the sun.
