Lumigan: Does Lumigan Work?
Are you getting worried your eyebrows and eyelashes are thinning? It may be because of aging. Some people have had to deal with thin eyebrows and unflattering eyelashes, and it’s because of their genes.
If you’re tired of putting on and removing your eye makeup and false eyelashes but will never consider getting your brows and lids tattooed, you’ll be happy to know that there are now easy, more natural ways of growing your hair.
Eyelash enhancers contain active ingredients that promote hair growth. These products are the new buzz in eye care—because you can never get that “wow”, unforgettable look without attractive eyes to begin with. Lumigan is one of the most preferred eyelash enhancers but, is it right for you?
Who can use Lumigan?
Lumigan, from pharmaceutical manufacturer, Allergan, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2010 for the treatment of intraocular pressure, a condition where there is high eye pressure most especially among people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
In the same way that Allergan discovered the use of Botox for treating wrinkles–Botox was originally intended to paralyze and relax tensed muscles which had the beneficial effect of lessening skin creasing-Lumigan’s welcome side effect of making eyelashes thicker and longer was observed.
Allergan then, created another line for Lumigan called Latisse which was marketed as an eyelash enhancer. Just as Lumigan is a prescription only drug, Latisse may only be bought with prescription. Because eyelashes follow a life cycle, which means it grows but eventually falls out, eyelashes grow back to their normal length and thickness after Lumigan or Latisse use is discontinued.
Some negative side effects remain, including possible permanent brown pigmentation of the iris, and darkening of skin on the eyelids.
Is it expensive?
Lumigan comes in two concentrations-one 0.01% and the other 0.03% Lumigan ophthalmic solution which cost approximately US$130 and US$100, respectively, for a 2.5ml bottle.
What Should someone Know Before Taking Lumigan?
Lumigan is being marketed cosmetically as Latisse. Whether you get Lumigan or Latisse, you need a doctor’s prescription to be able to buy one. Latisse costs approximately US$60 for 3ml, and US$100 for 5ml. If you’re planning to use it for your eyebrows, consult only with your doctor. Use only as prescribed. Always use a clean applicator and never attempt to reuse to prevent eye infection. Use a small amount to dab on your upper eyelids only; never use for lower eyelids.
How Does Lumigan Eyelash Serum Works?
Even drug manufacturer, Allergan, has yet to fully understand how and why Lumigan causes eyelashes to thicken. What has been definitely understood is that Lumigan works two ways: first, by extending the life cycle of hair strands, in that it takes longer to fall out; and, second, it stimulates and activates hair shaft even in areas where hair do not normally grow.
As Lumigan’s active ingredients work regularly on your eyelashes, you should begin to see noticeable improvements on your eyelashes as early as the second month of use but, normally within three months of nightly application.
Based on a study performed by Allergan where subjects were put under treatment and observation for 16 weeks, the following results were obtained:
- Eyelash length increased by 25 percent
- Thickness and fullness increased by 106 percent
- Eyelash darkness increased by 18 percent
Potential Lumigan side effects
Lumigan may cause both temporary and permanent side effects. Lengthier, thicker lashes are a pleasant but temporary side effect. Among the unpleasant side effects include, potential darkening of the eyelids, and permanent brown pigmentation of the iris.
Are There Any Health Warnings while using Lumigan?
Lumigan is safe for most people but, use must be avoided by those who have the following conditions: severe skin irritation and allergies on skin on the eyelids, pregnant and lactating mothers, macular edema, and recent eye surgery.
Can we use it without prescription?
Lumigan may not be bought over the counter. You need to schedule a visit with your doctor to obtain a prescription. Use only as directed, and refrain from using on any other part of your body without first consulting with your doctor.
Products are best used for purposes they were originally intended for. Although, sometimes, unintended side effects may just offer a new way to resolve other concerns, be it vanity or otherwise. The only prerequisite is for the pleasant, unintended side effects to be as thoroughly studied as well, most especially for their long-term effects and possible health risks. Come to think of it, the best inventions are the ones that were accidentally put together. When it comes to eyelashes, Lumigan might just offer the best and most practical solution.
